Winter, 1141. The Abbot of Shrewsbury returns from London bringing with him the harsh, unforgiving Father Ailnoth as pastor for Holy Cross parish. None are surprised when Ailnoth's body is found on Christmas morning, but it falls to Cadfael to find his murderer.
The Raven In The Foregate Chronicles Of Brother Cadfael Book 12 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
I've always enjoyed the Cadfael mysteries. Right now, I'm working my way back through all of them. They can be read in order (which is best, I suppose, because many of the characters have multi-book arcs and come and go -- but you can easily pick up any loose threads because Ellis Peters is skillful at her craft), but I've been reading out of order as the books go on sale.I've never believed in discussing plot in a review, and I won't start now. The cast involves a hate-filled priest, the usual monks and brothers, a pair of lovers (also a common thread in the Cadfael novels), and Cadfael himself -- looking into the past, into the present, and into the depths of human character.
If you're looking for shock, sex, thrills, you won't find them here. If you're looking for a complex mystery with complicated characters with tangled motivations, you will find all of those things in this (and any other Cadfael) book.

The Raven In The Foregate Chronicles Of Brother Cadfael Book 12 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Ellis Peters wrote a number of fine, well thought out mysteries set in the 1100's in Shrewsbury England. Each one is a stand alone book that develops the characters further until its like meeting old friends. They are accurate to the history of the area, and have forced me to delve into English history so I can better understand the whole background. This particular one has an interesting plot twist and the murderer in not who you expected. Since there was no such thing as CSI labs and all the modern ability to collect fingerprints, photos and evidence to pinpoint the criminal, the monk, Brother Cadfael, has to use only his understanding of people and the small area where he lives to solve the problem.
Ellis Peters does and excellent job of keeping the reader guessing as to is the guilty party in all of his twenty Cadfael stories. He is a good writer and knows eleventh century culture and history of life on the Welsh -England border. I highly recommend all of his Chronicles of Brother Cadfael books. The books are also of reasonable cost.
Let me say that I am a fan of Ellis Peters (aka Edith Pergarter) and the Brother Cadfael Chronicles.
This is the 12th book in the Brother Cadfael series. The "Raven" is a priest, Father Ailnoth, newly brought to the Foregate from Bishop of Winchester, Henry of Blois' household, a man utterly "without humility or charity". After alienating many of the parishioners of the Foregate, the priest is found drowned on Christmas morning.
There is the usual backdrop of the civil war between King Stephen and Empress Maud, with a love affair blossoming with a little cultivation from Cadfael, and the friendship between Hugh Barringar and Cadfael.
The resolution of the mystery is a surprising twist, while being completely believable. Well worth the read, and/or listen (on Audible.com).
I love the Cadfael series. It is like visiting an old friend in a quaint village. I am on read number three of the series. It has been several years since the last read but I fell into the stories, the language, the writing and the mystery with fondness and knowing that the story would be well written, full of possibilities and come to a successful conclusion. The author brings life to the characters, empathy and understanding. I enjoy all of the books in the series. I hope you will too.
4 1/2 stars.. I liked the last one,Dead Man's Ransom, just a bit more..Why? Perhaps the Welsh aspects and a bit more of the War between King Stephen and Empress Matilda- a favorite period to explore.
This one was very good though and made me think about exactly a Foregate was and what people who lived near an Abbey experienced.
"It is Christmas, A.D. 1141, Abbot Radulfus returns from London, bringing with him a priest for the vacant living of Holy Cross, also known as the Foregate."
Cadfael is always perfect and Hugh does well also. The young couple had their ups and downs for me, transient characters do that.
A fine read! I am going on to the next one now.
This is one of the Brother Cadfael mysteries by Ellis Peters (the pen name of Edith Pargeter). As is usual for these mysteries, she takes her time building characters and tension. They are all a pleasure to read. If want to get straight into the action on page one, these are not for you. If you want a book that will take you steadily to the edge of your seat and keep you guessing until the end, give this one a try. The historic setting is well researched (the author was a scholar and it shows) and a delight to enter. Brother Cadfael is one of my all time favorite sleuths ( his only competition is Sherlock Holmes). For a well written, delightful, suspenseful mystery that you won't have figured out half way through, give this a try. I doubt you'll be sorry.
I really enjoyed this tale. It wrapped up the year 1141 and exterior story line of King Stephen and Empress Maud.
Abbot Radulfus returns from Westminster with a new priest, Father Ailnoth, his housekeeper and her nephew. This it two weeks before Christmas. Father Ailnoth tends to the flock at the Holy Cross parish in the Foregate. He is harsher and stricter than the former priest, who died recently. Very few people like him. Christmas Eve at the Abby of St. Peter and St. Paul is full of activity. Brother Cadfael passes Father Ailnoth on his way into town. In the morning, Father Ailnoth is found dead in the mill pond.
The next week finds Brother Cadfael talking to suspects and getting to the bottom of the mystery. With a little from Sheriff Hugh Beringar at Father Ailnoth's funeral, the mystery is solved.
This story follows Ellis' pattern better than the previous one. Brother Cadfael is the chief detective, even though he's a simple herbalist at the Abby. I enjoyed this book. Hope you do, too.
